Which Brow Lift Technique Is Right for You?

Heavy, sagging brows can have a dramatic impact on the appearance of the entire face. Much of the time, it is the effects of aging that cause a person to consider whether or not they would benefit from a brow lift. In many cases, the brow is naturally low-lying, further exacerbating the droop that occurs due to muscle tension and collagen depletion. In our St. Louis ophthalmic surgery practice, we address concerns related to the heavy brow with either classic brow lift surgery or with an endoscopic technique. Here, we discuss the two.

The Classic Lift Technique

A full surgical brow lift is an outpatient procedure that uses general anesthesia. This depth of sedation eliminates pain sensations to promote a comfortable procedure. During this surgery, Dr. Holds will make an incision behind the hairline, where minor scarring can be inconspicuous. Through the coronal incision, skin along the forehead is lifted in a way that smooths wrinkles and returns the brows to a more symmetrical, elevated position. The results of a classic brow lift include younger-looking eyes and a significant reduction, if not elimination, of worry lines.

The Endoscopic Technique

An endoscopic brow elevation is also an outpatient procedure. This surgery uses local anesthetic and mild sedation. Because sedatives cause drowsiness, it is necessary to arrange reliable transportation from the surgical center. The endoscopic surgical technique is minimally invasive thanks to the use of an endoscope, a small lighted instrument that enables the surgeon to observe the tissue beneath the skin. Through several small incisions in the coronal area, a superficial tissue is separated from underlying muscle. Dr. Holds will then lift the tissue to reposition the brows along the upper orbital rim.

Making the Comparison

There are a few key factors that we carefully consider when determining the merit of a classic brow lift versus an endoscopic elevation. One is the thickness of the skin. Another is the position of the hairline. Because there is a possibility that the hairline may also shift upwards after a classic lift, the endoscopic technique may be better suited to individuals whose hair has begun to recede.
