What Microneedling is and Why You Want It
The microneedling technique that we perform in our St. Louis office includes PRP, or platelet-rich plasma. Combining microneedling and PRP boosts the regenerative effects of either treatment on its own. First, the microneedling technique is conducted with an automated device. A small applicator tip containing several tiny needles (microneedles are about the size of a strand of hair) is passed over the skin. In most cases, this feels like sandpaper. On areas of the face where there is little fat, such as the forehead, the pinpricks of the needles may feel more intense. A topical numbing solution applied before treatment can help immensely with comfort. After completing three microneedling passes over the skin, the PRP solution is applied. Because there are thousands of microchannels present, virtually 100 percent of the PRP liquid gets absorbed.
What’s the Point?
The reason we perform microneedling and why so many people are scheduling this treatment routinely is because the act of making tiny punctures in the skin creates a cascade effect that involves an increase in collagen production. Microneedling is categorized as collagen induction therapy because of the strong response it provokes in the immune system to heal a perceived wound. The production of collagen restores the matrix that supports smooth, firm skin. And this process is enhanced by PRP, the platelet-rich plasma that is separated out from your own blood cells (it’s just a routine blood draw!). PRP contains its own healing ingredients and growth factors that not only accelerate immediate healing from treatment but also an ongoing effect the refreshes the skin over time.
