How Botox Helps Treat Blepharospasm
When you hear “Botox”, you might think of wrinkle treatment. But did you know it was first approved for another purpose? Botox was FDA-approved as a blepharospasm treatment in 1989, long before it became the anti-aging sensation it is today.
Blepharospasm causes involuntary muscle contractions around the eyes, leading to frustrating and uncomfortable eyelid twitching. Botox is a well-researched treatment that helps reduce these spasms by relaxing the targeted muscles around the eye.
We apply a topical anesthetic cream around the treatment area to keep you comfortable during the Botox injections. The needle is ultra-fine, further enhancing comfort.
It usually takes about four days to relax the muscles fully, giving you rapid relief for a frustrating chronic issue. Once the Botox kicks in, you can expect continued relief for at least a few months. Most patients schedule sessions every 3-4 months to keep symptoms at bay.
What to Expect from Botox Results
Botox has proven highly effective for treating blepharospasm. About 95% of our patients experience significant relief of their eyelid twitching symptoms.
In the rare case that Botox doesn’t provide adequate relief for your eyelid spasms, our surgeons may recommend an advanced procedure called myectomy, in which we remove part or all of the muscle causing the problems.
